This symbol resembles very much the imperial symbol of the orb. This object represented a stylized version of the world in the middle ages. The inverted "t" inscribed in the circle separates three areas, representing Europe to the upper-right, Africa to the upper-left and Asia on the lower side. The classic single-beamed cross or Latin Cross in the commonplace depiction of this symbol is replaced by the Patriarch's Cross, a cross with two beams. The former is associated to the Greek Orthodox Church and the Eastern Roman Empire in many books. The first beam of the Patriarch's Cross is often said to be the sign posted by the Romans on Christ's crufixion; tradition states that the sign beared the sarcastic legend "Jesus Nazarene, King of the Jews" in Latin, Greek and Hebrew. I guess that which looks like a "R" may represent "Rex": "king" in Latin. This letter is in the spot usually reserved for Jerusalem in the abstract map of the Mediterranean Sea represented by the orb. Imperial Symbol of the Orb
